Boston University Tanglewood Institute  P. July 1-August 11, 2018 in Lenox, Massachusetts.  The Young Artists Harp Program for ages 14-19 (pre-college) is a full-immersion program providing young players a comprehensive overview of all facets of harp playing. Celtic Harp Camp L. July 26-28, 2018 on Horn Pond in Acton, Maine. ‘Tunes and Techniques’ covering strong Celtic harp technique, easily learned dance tunes, scale work, and some accompaniment tricks.  Teaching is 'by ear' but participants will receive sheet music and MP3s.  This is for advanced beginner level, but email Regina Delaney if you have any questions at

Eastern Music Festival P. June 23-July 28, 2018 in Greensboro, North Carolina. Age 14-23. Orchestral training institute. Every student rehearses six times a week and presents a full-length concert of standard orchestral repertoire. The two Young Artists Orchestras are of equal ability; seating assignments change weekly, and students generally perform with both orchestras during the course of the Festival. They are held to the same professional standards as our faculty regarding performance, attendance, and punctuality. Students may also perform with the faculty orchestra and visiting artists. Idyllwild Arts Harp Workshop P. Session 1 July 8-21, 2018; session 2 July 22-August 4, 2018 in Idyllwild, California. Intense workshop of harp ensemble, chamber music coaching, private lessons, final recital. Recorded audition required. Limited enrollment. High school age. Instructor: Allison Allport. Harp students can also earn the "regional/ state/national honor group" discount by participating in an American Harp Society national or local competition, completing American Harp Society Music Education Evaluation program or participating for a full year in their school or community youth orchestra within the last year. Illinois Summer Harp Class L, P. May 31 – June 2, 2018 in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois. Instructor: Ann Yeung, An intensive three-day class with Ann Yeung that offers the possibility of morning and afternoon master classes, private lessons, presentations, harp ensemble with a new work by Julia Kay Jamieson, recitals, and the participants' recital on the final evening. Interlochen Arts Camp Harp Programs P.  Interlochen, Michigan. Intermediate Division (students currently in grades 9-12) June 23 - August 6, 2018. Students work with world-renowned conductors, teachers and guest artists in private lessons, studio classes and harp ensemble. Students have opportunities to perform as soloists, in small groups and with large ensembles. Instructor: Joan Raeburn Holland. Auditions are required. Apply by February 1, 2018 for priority review.

MPulse Harp Institute  P. July 15-28, 2018 at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan. For high school harpists. Intensive two weeks designed to enhance the technical and musical skills of the dedicated young harpist. 
Performance study, including individual practice, private lessons, studio class, and harp ensemble, will be integrated with instruction in performance concentration, productive practice techniques, and the opportunity to prepare for college auditions. The Vancouver Symphony Orchestral Institute at Whistler P. June 24 – July 3, 2018 at Whistler, British Columbia, Canada. Students will be immersed in a collaborative musical environment alongside and mentored by a world-class symphony orchestra, under the direction of the VSO's internationally acclaimed music director, Maestro Bramwell Tovey. Participation in the Whistler Institute Orchestra, chamber music, individual and group coachings, as well as a variety of unique performance opportunities. VSOIW students will have an opportunity to participate in the VSOIW Concerto Competition. The grand prize winner will perform with Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. Whistler Institute Orchestra 2018 program includes Stravinsky’s Petrouchka, Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé Suite. No. 2 and Strauss’ Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks. The harp students will be coached by Elizabeth Volpé Bligh.  Auditions due March 11, 2018.

Young Artist's Harp Seminar P. July 7-21, 2018 at Kenyon College in Ohio. Private lessons, master classes, harp ensemble, various workshops and concerts. Two divisions: beginning to intermediate on pedal with Kathryn Andrews, Kristi Shade and intermediate to advanced on pedal with Susan Bennett Brady, Kimberly Rowe, Emily Levin, Angela Schwarzkopf. 2018 Guest artist: Nancy Allen.   Applications received after March 15 will be on a space available basis. 


2018 Summer Harp Camps 

Beginning in the Middle 2018 March 1-4, 2018 in Williamsburg, Virginia. Faculty include Lynne Aspnes, Robbin Gordon-Cartier, Deborah Henson-Conant, Kim Robertson and Frank Voltz.

Berklee Summer Harp Programs Three summer programs include harp: a one week summer String Intensive the last week of June; the Five Week Program  July 7-August 10; and the 12 week college credit program end of May through 2nd week in August.  The students receive weekly harp lessons and coaching to accompany the ensembles and many other playing opportunities- jazz bands, rock groups, chamber music, and eclectic string orchestra and recording sessions. The harpists receive a lot of individual attention every week. Faculty: Felice Pomeranz.

Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp L, P. Four sessions. Four sessions June 27-August 10, 2018 in Manistee National Forest, Michigan. Age range is grades 7-12. Five hours daily harp instruction including private lessons, harp ensemble, intensive practice, classes in theory, harp history, performance skills. Student recital. Harps provided. Cammac Summer Program L  July 15-22, 2018 on Lake MacDonald, Quebec, Canada. Sharlene Wallace’s Celtic harp program (all levels) is in counterpoint to a chamber music program and the Utrecht String Quartet - all against the backdrop of the Cantata for choir and orchestra, Ein’ feste Burg ist unser Gott, by the Grand Master of Counterpoint, J.S. Bach. Classes available: Celtic harp, chamber music, choir, orchestra, piano, voice masterclass, wind ensemble, string ensemble, recorder, yoga, introduction to counterpoint, reading music, active listening and folk dance. Bilingual instructors.

Canadian International Summer Harp Institute (CISHI) L, P. July 20-27, 2018 at Sanctum Retreat Centre in Caroline (near Calgary), Alberta, Canada, appr. 1 ½ hr. drive NW of Calgary. Intensive one-week training programme for students of all levels. All students receive private lessons focusing on technique and repertoire as well as ensemble coaching, healthy harping and daily stretch. Additional classes may also include performance preparation, orchestral rep, harmonization of lead sheets and improvisation, healthy playing depending on students’ needs. A limited number of rental harps are available on a first come, first serve basis so early registration is advised. Coda Mountain Academy Summer Music Festival, L, P. July 22-August 4, 2018 in Fayetteville, West Virginia. Harp students ages 12-23, early-intermediate through advanced. Harp students enjoy one-on-one private instruction 2x weekly, work daily with other student musicians in chamber music groups and large ensemble, and experience the natural beauty of a mountain setting. Connecticut Valley Harp Intensive Summer Camp  L, P.  August 4-12, 2018 in Simsbury, Connecticut. Ages 12-20, all levels. Day and overnight available. Campers will select between a solo, ensemble-based or combined track to follow during the week plus courses in rhythm, sight-reading and technique. Crane Youth Music P.June 24-July 7, 2018. At the Crane School of Music, SUNY-Potsdam, in Potsdam, NY. All harpists perform in orchestra, wind ensemble, master classes, harp ensemble, solo recital and private lessons. Pedal harp only, ages 12-18. Instructor: Dr. Jessica Suchy-Pilalis.

Crested Butte Chamber Music Intensive P. July 23-28, 2018 in Crested Butte, Colorado. Private lessons, master classes, opportunity for harp ensemble and chamber music with other instruments. No traffic lights or chain stores in this national historic town, but you will find a friendly community with world-class music and outdoor offerings. Instructor: Anastasia Pike.

Elizabeth Hainen Harp Colony at Curtis Summerfest 2018 P. June 20-26, 2018. Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. The Elizabeth Hainen Harp Colony is an advanced training ground for the world’s next generation of professional harpists. Harpists looking for a rigorous program will benefit from an intensive week of orchestral training through mock audition, master classes with Elizabeth Hainen and harp ensemble with Nancy Lendrim, culminating in a performance in the final concert. Instructors: Elizabeth Hainen, Nancy Lendrim.

Evergreen Music Festival (session II) P. July 29- Aug. 4, 2018 at Central Washington University in Ellensburg, Washington, in connection with the Tacoma Youth Symphony Association.This program is for students entering grade 9 through age 21. Week-long intensive orchestra training, choir, music theory, music history lectures, lessons, chamber music, evening recitals by students and music faculty.Several works on the music list call for harp participation. Féis Seattle  L. Biennial festival of Scottish Gaelic language and culture at historic Fort Worden near Port Townsend, Washington.  Will return in 2019. 

Glissando Summer Harp Fest  L, P. June 18-22, 2018 at the Towson Campus in Towson, Maryland. A one-week intensive harp summer program for intermediate to advanced students of all ages, designed to assist in developing harpists through the exploration of ensemble performance, stage presence and harp maintenance. Enrichment activities, rehearsals, and coaching will culminate in a concert on the final afternoon. Vendor fair sponsored by the Virginia Harp Center. Harp in the Mountains Summer Festival 2018 L, P.  July 22-28, 2018 in Madisonburg, Pennsylvania. Fun camp atmosphere and intense harp study for ages 13-20. With a focus on learning together, campers work on technique and musicianship while they play, practice and perform solo and in ensemble. 2018 theme is “Colors of the Harp” with music. HarpArts Adult Study Retreat L, P. June 3-10, 2018 at American Harp Center, Petoskey, Michigan. All levels. Offers an unparalleled opportunity for a limited number of adult harpists looking to improve their harp playing and expand their musical horizons. Houston Summer Harp Festival L, P.  July 9-14, 2018 in Houston, Texas, sponsored by Houston Baptist University. For incoming 6th-recently graduated 12th graders.  A non-competitive week of comprehensive studies on the many aspects of the harp and its music, history and ensemble playing. International Harp Festival in northern California will not take place this year because of the AHS Conference in that area.

Island Mountain Arts Harp & Cello School August 20-24, 2018 in Wells, British Columbia, Canada. Morning teaching sessions, and in the afternoons choose from musical topics including ensemble. Magical Strings Summer Harp (& Dulcimer) Camp L. July 27-29, 2018 at Magic Hill overlooking Puget Sound near Seattle, Washington. Lessons, workshops, harp history, harp circles. Marrowstone Summer Music Festival P. July 22- August 5, 2018 at Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington. Three divisions: Pre-college, University, Fellowship (advanced 18-25). Over 200 musicians, ages 14 to 25, come from over 30 states and several countries. Midwest Harp Festival  L, P.  July 15-21, 2018 at the University of Tulsa, Tulsa, Oklahoma. Open to students and harpists ages 9-adult. An opportunity for harpists to come together, take a break from the stress of life, and simply enjoy being harpists together. Ensembles, 4 community concerts, workshops, harp maintenance, harp music store. Salzedo and standard solo competition. Harp maintenance by Peter Wiley. The New Harmony Music Festival Summer School  July 9 - July 14, 2018, brings teachers in traditional music, jazz improvisation, and classical music together with students who want to explore different styles of music while sharpening their principal skills. During the 5 days of classes, students can expect to study with their principal teachers during the morning and early afternoon class periods. They may also want to attend a “gypsy class” where students can join in or observe classes in other styles. Students have the opportunity to perform as a part of several casual concerts and jam sessions. Northern Lights Harp Fest is a biennial event - please check back in 2019. A wealth of workshops and concerts, Celtic Immersion day and vendors in Cornwall, Ontario, Canada.

Ohio Scottish Arts School (OSAS) L.  June 23-29, 2018 at Oberlin College, Oberlin, Ohio. Scottish music taught on all levels, including airs, songs, marches, and dance music. Music taught by ear with music handed out after. Students 12 and up, excellent for teens. Bring your own harp. Rocky Mountain Springs Harp Program (intended for P, but L accepted) June 17 – July 14, 2018 in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. RMSHP accepts all levels, middle school to conservatory or post-grad. Four weeks of intensive harp study and personal development. Class topics include: technique, musicianship, performance, physical and mental health, and connections between music and other disciplines. Each student participates in harp ensemble, chamber opportunities, and twice-weekly lessons. Instructors: Rachel Browne, Kathryn Harms.

Somerset Folk Harp Festival  July 19-22, 2018 in Parsippany, New Jersey. Early bird registration discount begins January 1, 2018. 30+ presenters, 100+ workshops for all levels. All ages and abilities welcome. Harp Weekend is taking another year off. Please check back next year.

Spanish Peaks International Celtic Harp Retreat and Music Festival  September 27-30, 2018 in Southeast Colorado. Theme: Across the Divide, that will feature music and techniques that transcend time and cultures in Irish, Israeli and Arabic cultures. This is a harp retreat in the midst of a full Celtic Festival. Multi-level harp workshops and instruction. The small size of the harp classes will guarantee individual attention for all attendees; additional private lessons with the instructors can be arranged. The Summer Harp Academy P. July 15-22, 2018 in Lake Junaluska, NC. Intermediate to advanced harpist 13 and older. A comprehensive program designed to develop the versatile harpist. Participants will be able to hone their practice, performance and professional skills under the instruction of acclaimed professors Elzbieta Szmyt and Jan Jennings. Summer Harp Institutes L, P.  In Frederick Maryland July 9-13, 2018  and Richmond, Virginia July 16-August 3, 2018. One week camps of various levels for harpists ages 6-22.  The Institutes not only nurture musical ability but provide all of the camaraderie of a summer music experience where students form friendships that last a lifetime. The combination of an outstanding faculty, the beautiful setting, a rich musical environment and talented students makes the Institute an exciting, memorable and rewarding experience.
