2019 Summer Harp Camps with early registration deadlines

Boston University Tanglewood Institute  P. June 30- August 10, 2019 in Lenox, Massachusetts.  The Young Artists Harp Program is a six-week program limited to four students, enabling highly individualized and thorough instruction. Weekly lessons, chamber music, harp ensemble, and playing in the Young Artists Orchestra and Young Artists Wind Ensemble lend to a full-immersion program, providing young players a comprehensive overview of all facets of harp playing. Bowdoin International Music Festival  P.  Session 1 June 22-July 13, 2019. Session 2: July 13 – August 3, 2019. In Brunswick, Maine. For serious, advanced performers of classical music. Celtic Harp Camp L. July 18-20, 2019 on Horn Pond in Acton, Maine. ‘Tunes and Techniques’ covering hand techniques, chording, rhythm and tunes. This is for intermediate beginner-plus level. Contact Regina Delaney for info at

Curtis Summerfest Harp Colony  P. July 9-15, 2019 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. (Ages 13 and older) The colony is a true pedagogical institution, with emphasis on individual development for promising young harpists as well as professionals. The distinguished faculty conducts an intensive program of master classes and orchestral training. Harpists looking for a rigorous program will benefit from an intensive week of orchestral training through mock audition, and master classes with Elizabeth Hainen and renowned Curtis alumna, Judy Loman (Harp ’56), culminating in a performance in the final concert. Eastern Music Festival P. June 22-July 27, 2019 in Greensboro, North Carolina. Age 14-23. Orchestral training institute. Every student rehearses six times a week and presents a full-length concert of standard orchestral repertoire. The two Young Artists Orchestras are of equal ability; seating assignments change weekly, and students generally perform with both orchestras during the course of the Festival. They are held to the same professional standards as our faculty regarding performance, attendance, and punctuality. Students may also perform with the faculty orchestra and visiting artists. Evergreen Music Festival (session II)  P.  July 28- Aug. 3, 2019 at Central Washington University in Ellensburg, Washington, in connection with the Tacoma Youth Symphony Association. This program is for students entering grade 9 through age 21. Week-long intensive orchestra training, choir, music theory, music history lectures, lessons, chamber music, evening recitals by students and music faculty. Several works on the music list call for harp participation. Harp instructor TBA.

Illinois Summer Harp Class L, P. June 6-8, 2019 in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois. Instructor: Ann Yeung, An intensive three-day class with Ann Yeung that offers the possibility of morning and afternoon master classes, private lessons, presentations, harp ensemble with a new work by Julia Kay Jamieson, recitals, and the participants' recital on the final evening. Limited number of participants. or  Priority application deadline March 1, 2019, but applications will be considered past that date.

Interlochen Arts Camp Harp Programs P.  Interlochen, Michigan. Intermediate Division (students currently in grades 9-12) June 22 - August 5, 2019. Students work with world-renowned conductors, teachers and guest artists in private lessons, studio classes and harp ensemble. Students have opportunities to perform as soloists, in small groups and with large ensembles. Instructor: Joan Raeburn Holland. Auditions are required. Apply by February 1, 2019 for priority review. 

MPulse Harp Institute  P. July 21-27, 2019 at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan. For high school harpists. Intensive one week designed to enhance the technical and musical skills of the dedicated harpist. Daily private lessons, individual and guided practice time, studio classes, performance opportunities, and harp ensemble. The studio class will focus on several topics such as college preparation, performance concentration, and peer-to-peer observation.  Instructor: Joan Holland. Priority deadline February 1, 2019

Young Artist's Harp Seminar P. July 6-20, 2019 at Kenyon College in Ohio. Private lessons, master classes, harp ensemble, various workshops and concerts. Two divisions: beginning to intermediate on pedal with Kathryn Andrews, Kristi Shade and intermediate to advanced on pedal with Susan Bennett Brady, Kimberly Rowe, Emily Levin, Angela Schwarzkopf. 2018 Guest artist: Nancy Allen.   Applications are accepted starting in late fall. Those received after March 15 will be on a space available basis.


2019 Summer Harp Camps

Acadia Trad Festival L.  June 23-28, 2019. Offered by the Acadia School of Traditional Music and Arts in Bar Harbor, Maine. Classes, concerts and jam sessions in the Irish, Acadian, Cajun, Old-Time and Cape Breton styles. Harp instructor: Mairi Chaimbeul.

AHS Camp Innovation L, P. June 16-22, 2019 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, in conjunction with the 2019 AHS Summer Institute and National Competition.  All levels ages 12-17. Masterclasses, workshops, private lessons, world premiere performances, concerts. Faculty: Elisabeth Remy Johnson and Maria Luisa Rayan. Must be AHS member. Registration deadline May 1, 2019.

Berklee Summer Harp Programs Three summer programs include harp: The one week Global String Intensive, June 24-June 28, 2019,  the Five Week Program July 6-August 9,  and the Berklee Summer Semester, which is a 12-week college credit program May 20 through August 9, 2019.  The students receive weekly harp lessons and coaching to accompany the ensembles and many other playing opportunities- jazz bands, rock groups, chamber music, Celtic music and ensembles, eclectic string orchestra and recording sessions. The harpists receive a lot of individual attention every week. Faculty: Felice Pomeranz, and for the Global String Intensive, additionally Mairi Chaimbeul.

Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp L, P. Four sessions. Four sessions June 26-August 18, 2019 in Manistee National Forest, Michigan. Age range is grades 7-12. Five hours daily harp instruction including private lessons, harp ensemble, intensive practice, classes in theory, harp history, performance skills. Student recital. Harps provided. Eight students per session. Instructors include Jacqueline Pollauf, Stephanie Gustafson, Chen-Yu Huang and Amy Ley.  or 800-221-3796.

Canadian International Summer Harp Institute (CISHI) L, P. July 20-27, 2019 at Sanctum Retreat Centre in Caroline (near Calgary), Alberta, Canada, appr. 1 ½ hr. drive NW of Calgary. Intensive one-week training programme for students of all levels. Participants will receive multiple private lessons throughout the week. Students may bring solos they are currently working on or polishing, as well as something new to start. Orchestral excerpts and technical exercises may also be studied, based on student needs. Students are also encouraged to bring their own arrangements, compositions, or improvisation ideas for feedback. Depending on the number of attendees, it may be possible to book extra private lessons with faculty for an additional fee. Multiple workshops, ensembles, masterclasses, recitals.  A limited number of rental harps are available on a first come, first serve basis so early registration is advised. Crane Youth Music  P. June 30-July 13, 2019. At the Crane School of Music, SUNY-Potsdam, in Potsdam, NY. All harpists perform in orchestra, wind ensemble, master classes, harp ensemble, solo recital and private lessons. Pedal harp only, ages 12-18. Instructor: Dr. Jessica Suchy-Pilalis.

Crested Butte Chamber Music Intensive July 8-13, 2019 in Crested Butte, Colorado. With a participant-to-coach ratio capped at 3:1, harp students receive training in a supportive and intimate environment. Perfect for chamber music enthusiasts - participants will not only be coached by faculty but will perform alongside them, all while nestled in the stunning Rocky Mountains. Elizabeth Hainen Harp Colony at Curtis Summerfest 2018 P. June 9-15,  2019. Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. The Elizabeth Hainen Harp Colony is an advanced training ground for the world’s next generation of professional harpists. Harpists looking for a rigorous program will benefit from an intensive week of orchestral training through mock audition, master classes with Elizabeth Hainen culminating in a performance in the final concert. Féis Seattle (Slighe nan Gaidheal)  L. August 13-18, 2019. Biennial festival of Scottish Gaelic language and culture, this year at Evergreen State College, Olympia, Washington.  Daily classes and workshops, ceilidhs every night. Gilman School Summer Music Camp.  P, L  June 12 - 14, 2019 in  Baltimore, Maryland. Ages 9-18. We are proud to announce that this is our Fourth year! This Summer Music Camp is a great opportunity for older children, pre-teens, and teens to spend time focusing on their harp, piano, strings, woodwinds, and brass. The harp camp is designed to assist in developing harpists through the exploration of ensemble performance, stage presence, and harp maintenance.  Enrichment activities, rehearsals, and coaching will culminate with all students performing in daily concerts.  Students will be assigned ensemble partners depending on their grade and skill level. Students will also have the opportunity to focus on solo music and Ensemble.  Harp faculty Michaela Trnkova.

The Greenspring Summer Harp Institutes  L, P.   In Frederick Maryland. July 8-12, 2019 for all levels between ages 14 and 22.   In Richmond, Virginia Week 1 July 15-19, 2019 for beginner, intermediate and advanced* harpists. In Richmond, Virginia, Week 2 July  22-26 – Tour only.* July 27 - August 4  –Transatlantic Performance Tour on the Queen Mary 2*. Harps in the Glen, Wisconsin L, P  August 22-25, 2019 in West Bend, Wisconsin. Adults. A 3-day harp retreat in a peaceful, rural setting with instructors Kim Robertson & Sunita Staneslow. Limited enrollment. Five to six hours of activities daily with workshops, master classes, optional ensemble playing and an add-on Special Focus Days on Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday.  The focus is on musicality and expression combined with practical tools to improve technique for any level.,

Harp in the Mountains Summer Festival 2019.  June 23-29, 2019 in Madisonburg, Pennsylvania. Fun camp atmosphere and intense harp study for ages 13-20. With a focus on learning together, campers work on technique and musicianship while they play, practice and perform solo and in ensemble. 2019 theme is “World Travelers” with music from every continent. High Spirits Music Retreat’s Spring Celtic Harp Workshop L. April 5-6, 2019 in West Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada. Intermediate level. Houston Summer Harp Festival L, P.  July 8-13, 2019 in Houston, Texas. Sponsored by Houston Baptist University, The Houston Summer Harp Festival brings young harpists together in a fun and educational atmosphere for a week of intense and non-competitive study of the harp, its history, and music. The festival is open to incoming 6th grade through recently graduated 12th grade lever harp and pedal harp students who are comfortable with reading bass and treble clef and have had a minimum of 6 months of harp instruction. In a relaxed atmosphere that encourages camaraderie and artistic growth, students are equipped with practical tools and experiences to become more confident musicians through ensemble playing, small group projects, workshops and master classes. Join faculty Kimberly DeRosa, Therese Honey, Hope Cowan, and Susanna Campbell this summer for a fun, harp filled week that culminates in a harp ensemble concert.  This summer is extra special, as it is the 20th anniversary of the Houston Summer Harp Festival.  Registration and scholarship applications can be found at:

Island Mountain Arts Harp & Cello School August 19-23, 2019 in Wells, British Columbia, Canada. Morning teaching sessions, and in the afternoons choose from musical topics including ensemble. Enjoy special activities like the student BBQ, Breton dancing, instructor concert and the annual Céilidh. Marrowstone Summer Music Festival P. July 21- August 4, 2019 at Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington. Three divisions: Pre-college, University, Fellowship (advanced 18-25). Over 200 musicians, ages 14 to 25, come from over 30 states and several countries. Students are immersed in orchestral and chamber music rehearsals, master classes, and repertoire building professional performance opportunities. Harp lessons, coaching, orchestras, master classes. Midwest Harp Festival  L, P.  July July 14-20, 2019. Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights, Illinois. Open to students and harpists ages 9-adult. An opportunity for harpists to come together, take a break from the stress of life, and simply enjoy being harpists together. Ensembles, 4 community concerts, workshops, harp maintenance, harp music store. Salzedo and standard solo competition. Harp maintenance by Peter Wiley. Instructors: Charles W. The New Harmony Music Festival Summer School  July 7-14, 2019 brings teachers in traditional music, jazz improvisation, and classical music together with students who want to explore different styles of music while sharpening their principal skills. During the 5 days of classes, students can expect to study with their principal teachers during the morning and early afternoon class periods. They may also want to attend a “gypsy class” where students can join in or observe classes in other styles. Ohio Scottish Arts School (OSAS) L. June 22-28, 2019 at Oberlin College, Oberlin, Ohio. The nylon/gut harp classes will study Scottish dance music, airs, and songs, focusing on ornamentation, Scottish style, accompaniment, and learning by ear with music handed out after. Students 12 and up, excellent for teens. Bring your own harp. Instructors: Sue Richards, Rachel Clemente, Rachel Hair, Jen Narkevicius.

Rocky Mountain Springs Harp Program (intended for P, but L accepted) June 23 – July 13, 2019 in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. All levels, middle school to conservatory or post-grad. Intensive harp study and personal development. Harp technique, musicianship and performance, physical health and conditioning, improving mental attitudes and abilities, and connections between music and other disciplines. Spanish Peaks International Celtic Harp Retreat and Music Festival  L.  September 25-29, 2019 in Southeast Colorado. This is a harp retreat in the midst of a full Celtic Festival. Multi-level harp workshops and instruction. The small size of the harp classes will guarantee individual attention for all attendees; additional private lessons with the instructors can be arranged.
